    What is DATEV?

    The DATEV document package is the customary way to exchange invoices between a company and its tax adviser. It is a ZIP file following the DATEV XML interface standard (DXSO) in the "ledger" format: a control file carrying the accounting data plus the document image as a PDF. Unlike an e-invoice it states the posting direction — which is why creating one distinguishes between an outgoing and an incoming invoice. A document package is not a standards-compliant e-invoice and does not replace one; this tool translates in both directions so that the hand-off to the tax adviser and the invoice dispatch work from the same data.
